Ray MacKintosh

A young basketballer as well as a footballer, Ray started out as the reserve goalkeeper with Nairn when he was 15 years old, and made his debut against Ross County at Station Park. He moved to Nairn St Ninian as a goalkeeper in 1968 but soon started playing as an inside forward - with great success. Having scored close to 50 goals for Nairn Saints, his form attracted interest from Arbroath, with whom he played as a trialist towards the end of the 1969-70 season.

Despite interest from the Gayfield side, Ray re-signed with Nairn County as a striker during the summer of 1970. As a condition of his signing, County agreed to play a challenge match with St Ninian's at the start of the 1970-71 season. His first season at Nairn was a successful one scoring 26 goals and earning a runners-up medal in the Quality Cup. It came as no surprise when he was sold to Elgin City early in the 1971-72 season for a "bumper fee", still aged just 20.

Despite his departure, he remained a prominent sporting influence in Nairn as Chairman of Nairn Athletic Club, and in 1971 he was selected to play for Scotland's national basketball team.
