Nairn County failed to end their season on a high as they went down 2 goals to 0 tonight at Claggan Park, Fort William in a game re-arranged to the Friday from the next day to avoid clashing with the Scottish Cup Final. Gaffer Ronnie Sharp kept the same starting 11 that battled back to earn a point and nearly nick 3 away to Forres on Tuesday night. Former Fort man Stevie Sanderson returned to his old hunting ground but could only make the bench as he came back from a back injury that ruled him out on Tuesday night.
Nairn started the better of the 2 sides and came agonisingly close after only 4 minutes when a Gary Farquhar free kick from 20 yards out produced a top drawer save from the Fort William keeper at his botted left hand corner to produce a corner. But it was the home side who took the lead on 12 minutes when McKenzie slotted home a lose corner from 6 yards past an ailing Garry Stewart in the Nairn goal. Nairn tried to fight back from this as Garry Ewing fired a shot that thundered off of the Fort William bar. But it was Fort William who scored next as Davie MacDonald pulled down Fort's Stuart Vance in the area conceeding a penalty in the process. Steven Howden cooly slotted home the penalty to increse the home sides advantage to 2 going in at half time.
Nairn nearly got themselves back into the game but Kellachers lob was cruely headed off the line by Fort defender Paul Davidson. Then County passed up the best chance of the match when Stevie Sanderson, who replaced Willie Barron after 55 minutes, unfortunately scooped his shot up and over the bar from 10 yards out. Fort William then had a chance to kill the game off on 76 minutes but Howden should of done better than fire his shot wide of Stewarts goal. Nairn then cracked the woodwork again when the towering Colin Macleod headed goalward from a corner only to be denied by the keepers right hand post after 85 minutes. Sanderson again had a great chance to grab what would only have been a consilation for the travelling side but he put his shot agonisingly went past Fort keeper John Campbell's left hand post.
