Match Report

Nairn were brushed aside by 5 goals to 2 today(21/7/02) by a very strong Celtic side at Station Park despite battling back in the second half. County were without player manager Ronnie Sharp through injury and key midfielder Garry Ewing who is on holiday. This was Mark Holmes debut for the club and Mike Rae's first game at Station Park since signing on for the club as well as Steven Edwards' first game back at the club after a spell of living in Edinburgh.

A large crowd witnessed Nairn go behind early on when Steven Edwards conceeded a free kick on the edge of the box. This free kick was brilliantly saved by Mike Rae but from the resulting corner Stephen McManus rose above the County defence to header home the opener.

It wasnt long before Nairn were 2 behind when Rae was unlucky to be nut megged by Michael Doyle. Nairn were coming more and more into the game though and when Scott Kellacher slotted a shot past Herbet in the Celtic goal the Station Park faithful thought their team had clawed one back only to watch it go agonizingly wide. New signing Holmes was unlucky as well not to score as his shot was deflected towards the keepers top left only to be saved. From the resulting corner Ian Brooks should of done much better with a header he put wide.

Rae was called into action many times in the Nairn goal and if it hadnt been for him being on top form Nairn could have conceeder 6 or 7 goals before the interval.

The second half started the same way as the first and it wasnt long before the visitors had scored another 2 goals, the first coming on 50 minutes and the second on 59 minutes.
Nairn got off the mark though when Scott Kellacher blasted home after seeing his initial shot saved by Herbet. Any hope of a Nairn comeback looked to have been dashed when Celtic were awarded a penalty that was converted. But Gary Farquhar gave Nairn the last laugh when he expertly converted a free kick from 20 yards out curling it into the Herbet's top left hand corner.
