Match Report

That is the only way in which to describe what happened to Nairn on the park tonight. After an amazing battling 90 minutes Nairn's hopes of advancing to the final were dashed when a Caley corner swung in from the right and struck the Caley players hand on the line before sitting up for him to nod into the net. Then when another Caley player cut in from the left and skipped past Willie Barron before falling in a heap inside the box in the most theatrical of fashion the ref awarded a penalty to the anger of the Nairn team and support.

Both sides started well and played a lot of posession football in the middle of the park and not creating many clear cut chances. Caley, who were playing their full team had several chances from Keogh and Ritchie saved by the brilliant Mike Rae. Nairns best chances fell to the front 3 of Sanderson, Holmes and Kellacher but the slick Caley offside trap often frustrated the home side.

Nairn were by the far the dominant force in the second 45 and pushed the first division team all the way. Kellacher was oh so close with an overhead kick and Holmes was even closer when his curled shot came back off of the keepers left hand post. Ritchie then had a one on one shot excellently saved by Rae before another shot was dropped by Rae then recovered as the Caley players were screaming at the linesman for a goal.

Then came extra time and the two Caley goals. After the first goal went in Caley were just happy to play out the remaining minutes while a fatiqued County side kept plugging away for the goal they so richely deserved. Every County player ran their socks off and no one had a bad game. If they show this attitude every week then they are sure to be up there challenging for the title. But tonight it just wasnt to be.
