Match Report

County gaffer Ronnie Sharp made 2 changes to the side that ground out a superb 1-0 win against Cove last week. Youngster Scott Ogston was given a chance at the back replacing the suspended Steven Edwards and the returning Ian Brooks played up front in favour of Steve Sanderson who had to settle for a place on the bench.

Forres progressed forward early on and could of opened the scoring from their first attack. They had 2 more very good goal scoring chances before Mark Holmes opened the scoring against the run of play on 10 minutes. A Garry Ewing cross from the left broke out to Holmes at the edge of the who thundered home a volley into the keepers top left hand corner leaving Rae between the Forres sticks with no chance. This goal seemed to lift the County who came more and more into the tie as the game progressed.

It was still Forres who looked the more liklier of the 2 teams to put the ball in the net and they had numerous chances through front threesome of Rowley, Brown and Ross. Nairn then lost defender Alan Cormie to injury and he was replaced by Gareth Smith. It was Nairn who hit the net for the 2nd occasion of the afternoon when Gary Farquhar cleverly lifted the ball over Rae's head and into the net 5 minutes from the brake.

The visitors again looked the brighter of the 2 sides in the second 45 but Nairn kept battling away and should of been 3 in front early on in the half but somehow Holmes managed to put his shot the wrong side of the keepers right hand post. Another good Nairn chance fell to Kellacher but unfortunately he put it just wide. County were then reduced to ten men when Mark Holmes was given his marching orders after receiving his second yellow card for a mis timed tackle.

This didn't seem to effect the run of play as after a tatical reshuffle that saw Ian Brooks drop into midfield to play wide right Nairn were still creating chances and seeming to have the upper hand possession wise. Some good football by Nairn down the right then saw the ball played across the box to Garry Ewing who let fly but his effort went just wide. County then all but booked their place in the quarter final draw when a Farquhar free kick was headed home by Ian Brooks after 87 minutes.

Forres did manage to pull 1 back in injury time when Dave Macdonald conceeded a penalty that Garry Ross hit home.

This game serves as further evidence that Nairn can still pull off a win when they are not playing at their very best. Ronnie Sharp will be happy to see his team in the Quarter Finals and there is no reason why County can not go all the way and have this trophy on display in the trophy cabinet next year.
